When to Use Your Hints โ and When to Save Them
FivLet gives you two hints per game. Each hint reveals one letter in its correct position on the word tiles. Two hints sounds like a lot of help โ until you burn both of them on your first guess and realize you've barely moved the needle. Hint timing is one of the most underrated skills in FivLet. Here's how to think about it.
Why early hints are almost always a mistake
On guess one, you have zero information about the word. A revealed letter tells you one position out of five โ but you don't yet know what the other four letters are, which letters are definitely not in the word, or whether common letters like E, A, and R are present at all. That revealed letter is floating in a sea of uncertainty. It narrows things down, but not nearly as much as it will later.
Experienced FivLet players treat hints like late-game resources. They're most powerful when you've already eliminated several letters and you're stuck between two or three possible words. At that point, a single revealed letter can collapse your options to one.
The ideal time to use your first hint
Your first hint is best used at guess three โ if and only if you feel genuinely stuck after two guesses. At this point you have information from two rounds of letter tracking. You know which letters are in the word and which aren't. A revealed letter in the right position at this stage often makes the answer obvious immediately.
If after two guesses you already feel confident about what the word might be, skip the hint and guess. You don't need to use hints to win โ they're insurance, not a required step.
The ideal time to use your second hint
Save your second hint for a genuine emergency โ when you're at guess three or four, you're not confident in your next guess, and you have one or two guesses left. This is when the psychological pressure of FivLet peaks, and that pressure makes players sloppy. A revealed letter at this stage cuts through the noise and gives you something concrete to work with.
If you've already won before using both hints, that's a great outcome. Unused hints don't penalize you โ they're just not needed this game.
Special cases: when to use hints earlier
There are situations where using a hint on guess one or two is defensible. If the AI clue is genuinely cryptic โ the kind of abstract Difficult mode clue that gives you almost no concrete direction โ a revealed letter can anchor your thinking early. Knowing the first letter of the word, for example, immediately narrows the possibilities dramatically. In these cases, a well-timed early hint is better than two wild guesses burning up your remaining attempts.
Also consider using hints earlier if the clue clearly points to a word family but you can't narrow down which specific word. If you know the answer is a color but can't decide between five possible colors, a revealed letter will settle it faster than guessing blindly.
Hints and the leaderboard
FivLet Premium members who compete on leaderboards should know that winning is winning regardless of whether you used hints. The leaderboard tracks wins, not efficiency. So don't be proud โ if you need the hint to win, use it. A win with two hints is infinitely better than a loss with none.
